This one might hit a nerve for many of us: long-distance friendship. As we get older and start to pursue different paths in life, it’s common for friends to move away, take on new jobs or start families. And it can make it harder to keep in touch, and many of us have experienced the pain of losing a once-close friendship due to distance.

Plus with the “Japa” syndrome going on in Nigeria, people are starting to experience more long-distance friendships than ever before. At this point, it’s only the five of us that are still left in this country.

But fear not, we’re here to offer some advice on how to maintain your long-distance friendships and stay close across the miles. It’s tested, trusted and approved by us so it should be of help to you.

First and foremost, communication is key—cliché but true. We make it a point to regularly catch up with our friend, whether that’s through texting, calling, or a video call. We all lead busy lives, but even a quick “thinking of you” message can make all the difference in maintaining a strong friendship.

Next up, we like to be creative with how we connect. If our schedules don’t align for a call or video chat, we try watching a movie together while on the phone or send care packages with thoughtful items that reflect shared memories. By creating special moments, you’ll both feel like you’re still experiencing life together.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to plan a visit. It’s amazing how even just one weekend spent with your friend can reignite that spark and remind you why you’re such good friends in the first place.

It’s true that long-distance friendship can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be a death sentence for your relationship. By staying present and making an effort to connect, you’ll be able to continue building a strong bond with your friend, no matter the distance.

Stay sweet, kind and continue nurturing those long distance relationships. And tell your friend that we have you all this great advice; you’re welcome!
