Have you ever gotten nervous from thinking about stepping into a gym alone for the first time? We definitely have. You’re not alone in feeling this way so we’re here to help.
We’ve all had moments where we wished we could go to the gym with a friend or partner—the classic gym buddy system. This is when we wake each other up, cheer each other on, motivate each other. But the truth is that there will be times when we’ll need to go at it alone. At least one time. Your buddy might be busy or simply not into the gym thing again, even after all your encouragement. It’s okay, it happens to the best of us.
However, our journeys are unique and we cannot attach our fitness success solely on the availability of others.
Now for the rest of us, we claim to love home workouts, they’re great too, but only if we’re not using this as an excuse for our shyness or social anxiety? We understand that it’s easy to stay inside our comfort zones, but remember the saying, Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. We just need to muster up some courage and walk through those glass doors of the gym!
One of the fears that keep us from going to the gym alone is the fear of looking clueless when using gym equipment. A way you can fix this is by preparing beforehand. We can take note of the machines or weights you’ll be using, and know your workout routine like the back of your hand. There’s plenty of help available online, we use Youtube a lot. Also, we can learn and observe others. If you’re still unsure, you can ask a trainer. There are usually trainers around who are more than willing to guide you. Or find that one gym rat who seems to know what they’re doing and kindly ask them for help.
As obvious as this seems, we’ll just put it here as a reminder. Please remember to carry along your headphones or ear pods and go ahead and blast your favorite music or podcast. This will definitely have you in your own world. And it’s a cue to everyone around that you probably want to be left alone.
We want you to let your fitness goals inspire and drive you. Whether it’s shedding a few kilos or toning up your muscles, or just trying to move more, envision your future self and let it empower you. We think that keeping the focus on your goals, rather than people around you will go a long way.
And most importantly, have fun! Please don’t see it as a task. We want to make sure to enjoy the process. Each day, each rep, you’re getting stronger, and that’s amazing.
Also remember that you’re beautiful and your journey is personal. Everyone at the gym started where you are, with uncertainties and some hesitations. With time, we guarantee that you will not only feel more confident, but you’ll start enjoying your workouts and probably even build a community along the way! Or replace your gym buddy, respectfully.
So take a deep breath, smile and do your thing. We believe in you!
