As black women, we have long realized that there are some makeup trends that just don’t work for us. And you know what, there are no hard feelings. It’s just that they don’t compliment our features and it’s not something we should feel bad about. However, the girls said let’s create our own trends and we did!
Let’s take a moment to appreciate some of the trends we’ve been sporting lately. Starting off with the “No Makeup” look, which for a long time was something we didn’t think was possible for us, given that the whole purpose of makeup was to cover our imperfections. But lo and behold, we are rocking it! No one needs heavy foundation anyway?
One trend that is always in style but especially popular among black women in 2023 is the glowy skin look.
After applying your foundation, highlight your cheekbones, brow bones, and bridge of your nose with a highlighter. The entire plot is to achieve that perfect glow. Although, we don’t want to go too heavy with it, we use a dewy setting spray and a glow mist for the neck area for that subtle shiny finish.
Another trend we can’t get enough of is bold, colourful eyeshadow. Even though we do love our neutral shades. We love that the girls are not afraid to step out with some bright colours. Whether it’s neon pink, bright yellow, or blue. We’ve realized that we can wear any colour on our skin tone and make it work.
And let’s not forget about the glossy lips! That lip liner and pink lip combo with a glossy finish—my personal favourite. If every trend fades away, I will make sure that this one stays alive.
Glossy lips are now our thing, and they add the perfect amount of shine to complete any look. Not to mention that it complements our beautiful full lips perfectly.
If you’ve been struggling to keep up with the mainstream makeup trends, remember that there is nothing wrong with that. Instead, embrace the fact that we have our own unique makeup styles that we can rock with confidence. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things, you never know what looks you might discover.
We black girls have found our own niche in the makeup world, and we’re not letting go anytime soon. And we love to see it!
