You’re not alone if you’ve ever experienced event-related anxiety. You know that feeling when you’re so excited to attend an event, but when it’s finally close to the date, you start to panic. It’s okay, we get it.
At some point in our lives, we’ve all experienced this type of anxiety, but where does it come from? Fear of failure? Comparing ourselves to others? Thinking we don’t belong in the room? Everyone of those are the reasons we create for ourselves. It happens to the best of us, trust me. Someone you’ve been admiring from afar for a while is on the guest list and all of a sudden, you no longer feel like attending—“I’ll go for the next one.” Deep down, you’re just scared or feel overwhelmed.
But, you have us to tell you that you do belong in the room, you are worthy, and you are enough. It’s not been too long ago before we realized this for ourselves too. But, since we did, we’ve been at these events with our chin up and shoulders high, still humble of course. Here’s how we prepare ourselves for this:
First, remind yourself that you deserve to be in the room. This event is an opportunity for you to be present, to connect with others, and to learn. So, own it and enjoy it!
Next, when attending an event, always put effort into how you look, whatever that means to you. It boosts our confidence and makes us feel good about ourself. And guess what? Feeling good about yourself reflects positively on others.
Thirdly, we understand that anxiety can be challenging, so don’t hesitate to lean on your community for support. Reach out to a friend or a family member, and talk to them about your fears. It’s okay to be vulnerable, and remember, your community has your back.
Lastly, breathe! Take a few deep breaths, slow down, and relax. Remember, it’s just an event, and nothing bad can happen to you (Well, we pray so for the most part.) It’s a place where you should be yourself, enjoy, and have fun.
In conclusion, event-related anxiety is real, and we understand the struggles. But, know that you are not alone, and together, we can manage it. Just know that we believe in you and you should too, so talk your talk.
Stay calm, look great, and own it – you got this!
