Making the Most of Your Layover: Activities to Turn Your Travel Break to a Fun Experience

We’re pretty certain you’ve been there: Stuck in an airport with time to kill and feeling like there’s nothing more boring in the world than waiting for your next flight. We get it! We’ve been there too. But we think that layovers don’t have to be so bad; with the right perspective and some enthusiasm, we can turn this ‘waiting game’ into an exciting part of our journey. Here’s how we recommend you make the most of your layover, whether it’s a short one or a day-long stop:

For short layovers that last under 3 hours, we like to keep it simple. So we’d catch up on those pending emails, or finish that work presentation. While at it, we like to listen to our favorite podcast or get lost in a good audiobook. Have you ever noticed those unique little shops, lounges, or interesting food places that every airport has? Well, it’s the perfect time to explore these places.

Now,  if your layover is a longer one and you can spare more time, the airport really becomes your playground. You can stretch those legs with a walk around the terminals or discover if your airport has a gym or yoga space (you’ll be surprised how many do). If they do, please go for it.

If you’re able to afford it, get into a quiet lounge, enjoy some free Wi-Fi, watch a movie or two and eat as many complimentary snacks as you can, you deserve it.

We know that sometimes a layover can last as long as a day. In that case, we can take a quick tour outside the airport (just make sure you have enough time to return). Without going too far from the airport and anywhere known for traffic, we can check the local markets, take a city tour, or  treat ourselves to an authentic local meal.

Layover is also a great time for some mindful practices too, like meditation—stay zen in the midst of the chaos. Afterwards, try reading up more about your destination, you can never be too knowledgeable. Trust us, time will fly faster than your flight.

Now, this one is our favorite one just because it involves connecting with other people. Please don’t be scared to engage a fellow traveler in a conversation, of course this is after you’ve read the room. Giving a compliment is always a good conversation starter, plus you’re in an airport to catch a trip. There’s loads of things to talk about. That might just be your lifetime friend!

Now, these tips aren’t exactly fun but we think they’re necessary to know for your next layover.  We always make sure we have our airlines’ app for any sudden gate changes, delays, or just to keep tabs on our flight status. And we suggest you do the same.

Remember to have your essentials at hand – we’re talking a portable charger, your preferred headphones and travel-sized sanitizer. Also, we  always try to have a quick look at airport facilities and nearby places on the web, you never know when that information might come handy!

Above all, remember that each moment is an adventure, even your layover. Don’t be scared of the unexpected, embrace it! Use the time not only to explore new places, relax and recharge, but also to enjoy your own company and the experiences around you. Have a safe trip!
